tree of life

I finished one of the projects on my list today! This was a HUGE project that I've been working on (here and there) for the past year... I am so excited to have this complete. I love the trees! Cable work amazes me. I always feel like I'm creating some magic! I also am very happy with the leaf border, I think it really finishes the blanket nicely. I felt so proud as I took photos of the finished piece.

As I made this afghan I had many hours to think of what the different elements meant to me. This afghan symbolizes the "tree of life" and the path we choose to take in that life. The field of posies between the trees is meant as a remembrance to always stop (and smell) and appreciate the beauty of life and all that it brings. There is sure to be some rocks in that field, but just as surely those posies will push through any obstructions and bloom again. I am very lucky to have a wonderful family and come from an amazing family. This afghan is a tribute to them and especially to my mom.

  1. Holly!! This is GORGEOUS! I remember you showing it to me before it was finished and thought it was gorgeous then. So much work! This should become a wall hanging and not an afghan to drape over your body. It is too beautiful! Love it! That really was a huge thing off your "to do" list!

Add me as a participant on your gift stress list! I thought I had 2 weeks before N's bday but you're right - it is next week!!! Yikes! Plus 2 more gifts I need to buy/send out for a niece and nephew's bday. Aaaargh!

Ok - got to run the little girl to speech therapy. Hope you have a good day! -gigi

  2. Thanks so much Gigi!

I know... I really don't know where the time has gone! I feel like I lost a month somewhere! :)

  3. WOW!!! I agree with Gigi. This is absolutely gorgeous. I sure hope you insured the box because it may get lost in the mail (at least that will be my story). That is a lot of time you put into this gorgeous piece of art.

    Luv ya

  4. You think you're so funny! Do you plan on hiding the afghan everytime I come to your house? or will you just say, "oh... that... I've had it for years! I don't remember where I got it..." :)

I can't wait for you to get the package to see it in person! Thanks for the kind words... Love you!

  5. Your work is beautiful- I especially like the use of a separate color for the border. Can you estimate the yardage for the border?
    Thanks-

  6. Thank you so much, nissa... I would estimate around 500 yards. (I basically used not quite 1 1/2 skeins of yarn. The yarn contained 312 yards per skein.) I really loved how the different color really showed off the gorgeous leaf border while not distracting from the beautiful design of the afghan itself. I hope you're planning on making this afghan... it's such a great project!

Let me know if you have any other questions... Thanks again for the kind comments!

Yes-I plan to make this afghan! I downloaded the pattern last week and have been doing swatches in various colors/materials to see what works. Such luck to run across your blog-the detail pictures really help.
    Thanks again

  9. Hi, Holly!
Found the pics of your beautiful afghan on the KAL from Lion Brand. I am almost done with the twin tree section and have found this project challenging but fun. As I was knitting along I was thinking what a different color border would do and you have answered my query. Yours is just awesome! Thanks for the beautiful pics to inspire me to keep on Knitting!
